Rare 17th Century Italian Trunk with Marquetry Insets This extremely rare rectangular Italian coffer or trunk from the 1600’s has numerous architectural, geometric and curvilinear motifs. The fittings are iron and the woods vary from walnut wood to the exotic woods for the marquetry. The motifs are carved, incised, punched, stamped and inlaid. There are three openings to the trunk, one on the top with a hand forged reticulated iron ring for opening it, and the others are on the front which has two doors. The inside contains a later built- in section having one shelf and a section of four drawers. The top has two panels incised with diagonal lines which, over the centuries, are barely visible. The panels are inset and surrounded by stepped in and stepped out linear moldings. The architectural motifs on the front are miniature arches supported by Doric pilasters and divided by stepped in Doric columns and capitals. These are the two front doors to the trunk. The arches are mimicked on the sides. The indented portions of the arches have marquetry in the forms of flowers in vases bearing dolphin handles. The sides of the trunk have the same arches with images that have worn away with the passage of time. Decorative motifs over the rest of the trunk are stars, inverted crescents and darts, dogtooth, square cutouts, and florets. The trunks rests upon two s-scroll feet with a central fleur-de-lis and two primitive back feet which came with the trunk when we found it, most likely not original to the trunk. These are removeable/optional. There are two locks but no keys. This rare piece of Italian furniture history will be an attribute to any home. Condition: Rubs and nicks to wood, minor lifting of marquetry all consistent with age. Height of Trunk Only=27 1/4, L=73 1/8, D=27 1/8
