Bill Witt grew up during the depression, and was inspired by the great documentary photographers of the F.S.A. His first photographic work was photographing poverty in rural India while stationed there during WWII. He continued his documentary photography in NYC as a member of the Photo League, but also studied painting with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, and returned to painting and art photography in the 1970’s. This and the other Witt photographs we have for sale are vintage prints from his Photo League period.
8 1/4 x 7 3/4- inch gelatin silver print, mounted on board. Signed and dated 1943 recto. Credit stamp and pencil signature, title on verso, plus "Old Print from about 1947 to early 1950's" in his hand.
A brilliant print that shows the gloss of the rainy street. The photograph is more artistic than documentary.
