Beautifully engraved certificate from the Quesnelle Hydraulic Gold Mining Company issued in 1910. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of water being blasted against a mountain side. This item is hand signed by the company’s president and treasurer and is over 90 years old. Quesnelle, situated on the banks of the Fraser, at the mouth of Quesnelle River, is an important point, being the objective point of both railway routes sketched out for this part of the province. The fur trading and fitting out for a long distance up the Fraser are done here. Two hotels, several stores and a sawmill are to be found here, The Chinese on the bars of both rivers contribute to swell the revenue of the place, and the heavy ox teams seldom go further than this. Good vegetables are grown here for export to the mines, and a school keeps the rising generation up to the requirements of the age. The stage arrives weekly on Thursdays, carrying mail. The Hudson Bay Co. and Jas. Reed, Esq., M.P. keep large stores here. Quesnel, the town, is located in south-central British Columbia, Canada. It lies at the confluence of the Quesnel and Fraser rivers, 411 miles (661 km) north of Vancouver. The river and townsite (Quesnellemouth until 1864) were named for Jules Maurice Quesnelle, who accompanied Simon Fraser's exploring party in 1808. The settlement grew during the Cariboo gold rush of 1862. It is now the service centre for an extensive lumbering, farming, and mining area, and its main industrial establishment is a plywood plant. Tourism has developed mainly because of improved road conditions and the restoration of the historic Barkerville gold-mining area to the east. Quesnel also serves as a base for anglers and big-game hunters. Inc. village, 1928; town, 1958. Pop. (1991) 8,179.
