Pulp Fiction Illustrator Robert Maguire Oil Painting Portrait of Buddhist Bodhisattva Guanyin

Unavailable

This original oil on wooden panel by Robert Maguire (American, 1921-2005) features the full length portrait of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva associated with compassion.  Sometimes spelled Kwan Yin, the name is short for Guanshiyin which means "observing the sounds (or cries) of the world".  Measures 22 by 28 in.  Overall condition is good.  There is some in-painting noticeable to the left of the figure, but the primary and secondary subjects in the scene are undisturbed.  The artist's rendering of the woman's face exhibits exceptional technique.  In this area he employed the finest brush strokes, while in painting the background he employed the impasto technique.  Signed by the artist, with various import/export stamps on verso, including those from Schiphol airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands.  Maguire was an artist and illustrator known for creating the cover art for hundreds of American novels, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a master portraitist and also known for his depiction of the "femme fatale" woman.  Condition is good. There is some obvious in-painting visible immediately to the left of the figure, and may be other restorations.
