A good, clean, First Edition copy of "Princely Treasures", by Archduke Geza von Habsburg, formerly head of the Silver Department at leading International Auctioneer, Christie's, and widely regarded as the world's foremost expert on the work of the Russian Court Jeweller, Carl Faberge, published by Thames and Hudson of London in 1997. The concept of demonstrating princely power and wealth through a treasury - a logical extension of the great ecclesiastical treasuries that saw their beginning in Byzantium, was rapidly taken up in Northern Europe. These treasuries, many of which still exist, also incorporated scientific instruments as well as natural wonders gathered from the four corners of the earth. This beautifully illustrated book not only shows some of the finest pieces from collections still intact, but also re-assembles some of those now sadly dispersed. A rich and rewarding study. Hard covers, large format, 224 pages, 250 full colour illustrations, original dust jacket, { now a little untidy }. Ref. PTGVH/A5.
