A study for the large group portrait of the House of Commons, 1833 (includes George Hamilton Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen; Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby; William Ewart Gladstone; Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey; Sir George Hayter; John Singleton Copley, Baron Lyndhurst; William Lamb, 2nd ...), currently on display in the National Portrait Gallery. Sir Thomas Gladstone of Fasque (1804-1889), the second baronet, was conservative M.P. for Queenborough 1830, for Portarlington 1832-5, and Leicester 1835-7.He was the elder brother of William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister. Schools, where he won two medals. Is said to have gone to sea as a midshipman in the Royal Navy 1808. Won a 200 guineas premium at BI 1815. Appointed miniature painter to Princess Charlotte and the Prince of Saxe-Coburg 1815. Visited Italy and Parie 1815-18 and 1826-31. Elected a member of the Academies of Rome, Parma, Florence, Bologna and Venice. On the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 he was appointed her Portrait and History Painter. Paitned a large picture of her Coronation, as well as her State portrait. Established a highly successful society portrait practice. Appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to the Queen 1841. Knighted 1842. Exhibited at RA (48), BI (40) 1809-38 and his last exhibited works were portraits of Queen Victoria and Lord Melbourne. A transcript of his diaries 1838-49 is in NPG London. Died London 18 January 1871. 1838-49 is in NPG London. Died London 18 January 1871. Buried St. Marylebone Cemetery, Finchley. Studio sale held Christie's 19 April 1971. Best remembered for his large portrait groups. The miniaturist, Henry Collen, was his pupil.
