10 x 8 inch gelatin silver print, with Cunningham's "1331 Green St. San Francisco" stamp on the verso. A typed paper label attached to the bottom of the photograph: "Roethke in Alley. (Poet in Residence at the University of Washington. 1959."
Roethke (1908 - 1063) won the Pulitzer prize for poetry in 1954, 2 National Book Awards, and the Bollingen Prize.
Here he is posed against a wall with the letter "R" and a pointing hand, with other details. His image is small compared with the large details of the wall. This is a great symbolic portrait of a major poet.
Rich, just a bit of wear in the tip of the lower right corner.
