This exceptionally sculpted bronze from a model by Henri Peinte (French, 1845-1912) depicts Orpheus and Cerberus. Measures: 27.5 x 12 x 9 inches, plus marble pedestal. In Greek mythology, Orpheus was a hero endowed with extraordinary musical skills.  On expedition with the Argonauts, he saved them from the music of the Sirens by playing his own more powerful tunes. Upon return, he married Eurydice who was soon killed by a snake. Grief-stricken, he then ventured to the land of hte dead to attempt to bring her back to life. Along the way he charmed the ferryman, Charon, and his dog, Cerberus, guardians of the River Styx and the underworld. His grief and music charmed Hades, king of the underworld, who allowed him to take Eurydice back to the world of life. Item HA-2074.5.3.122616.
