This lovely pair of full length portraits by the London-based figurative painter, Jane Maria Bowkett (1837-1891) measure approximately 11.5 by 20 in, and reside in period giltwood frames measuring 23 by 41 in. Signed and dated 1887. Bowkett was a popular painter of genre scenes, typically depicting women, children and families in home settings and countryside landscapes.  She exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution and the Suffolk Street Gallery.  She was the wife to Charles Stuart (1838-1907), a landscape painter who also exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a learned society dating from 1707.
