Note the misspelled REVIERA..Stunning & unusual. Nicer than my photos. 8" x 8" total height & width. Silver plate on nickel of cylindrical shape although it appears to be tapered in my images. I expected to see the names of Scott & Zelda engraved on it!! The trophy was awarded to "CAPTAIN B. L. Clay" which is rather fitting since he played for the Riviera side where the courts are clay courts. He won for either playing singles, doubles or mixed doubles. The Riviera teams played in Mentone, Bhordighera, San Remo, Sportono and Monte-Carlo. The Monte-Carlo tennis championship was first held in 1897. The English side played in Ealing, Bourtonvale, South Northcumberland, Ryton and Godalming. For further information and matches please enlarge my 2 close-up photos. The lid of the trophy humidor is engraved "Lawn Tennis Prizes" which must not refer to the Riviera matches since those courts were not grass but clay. It further is engraved "TOBACCO" on the lid's knob. It is marked "Vectis Plate" and "Combes Company Rangoon & London. There are 3 tiny pins inside the lid which I assume held some type of screen to retain a moist sponge. It is gone now. The Tobacco jar was used as such to judge by the discoloration inside and the many loving polishings it has received over the years, so much so that the nickel shows through on both lower sides & the top of the lid which gives it character in my opinion. There is no damage, dents or scratches. A beautiful classy piece reminding us of the glamorous days between the 2 World Wars.....Canadians will pay applicable taxes.
