Circa 1850
This charming pair of antique French andirons depicts squirrels on a formal platform base. They are looking off to the side at full attention, each clenching a nut in one of their paws with their tails aligned with backs. Each sits upon a mound of branches bearing foliage and nuts. The platform base beneath has a central cartouche on the front with half figures of animal heads and cartouche bodies at the front sides. There are slots and holes at the base for log holders (not with these pieces). The patination is antique and also applied in small areas, including some parcel gilt.
Condition: Minor wear to motifs. There is a little bit of 'play' between top and bases.
