Pair Antique Greek Revival Neoclassical French Limoges Enamel Plaques

Unavailable

This pair of neoclassical figural enamel plaques depicting Greek mythological male figures dates from the nineteenth century.  The plaque on the left appears to bepict Hades or Pluto, King of the Underworld and god of the dead and the hidden wealth of the Earth, with his beloved owl at his side.  The other depicts Poseidon, God of the sea, rivers, floods, droughts, and storms, emerging from a seashell with trident.  There is craquelure on the lacquered surface of the rear of each, and the condition of the front of each plaque is very good, with no visible losses, some smudges and some light surface grime. Each measures 15.5 by 9.6 in (39.4 by 24.4 cm).  There are no hallmarks.  Shown below are photos taken both with and without flash, which explains differences in color and brightness among some shots.
