Finely detailed pair of Austrian gilt bronze patina ceramic relief oval wall plaques depicting mythological themes. One of the plaques shows Greek Goddess of the wild, Artemis, with a deer and the other the beautiful Trojan Prince Ganymede with an eagle. Both plaques are inscribed K. St., the signature of Austrian sculptor Karl Sterrer, and marked Depose (Registered in French) J. Kalmar, apparently a foundry stamp. Undated but we have seen similar items dated early 1890's. Karl Sterrer (1844-1918) was an Austrian historical scene painter and sculptor, also known as Carl Sterrer, not to be confused with his son, an artist by the same name who lived in the 1885-1972 period. Artemis or Diana, as she was known to the Romans, is depicted feeding a fawn (young deer). Although she was Goddess of the hunt, deer were sacred to her and she often is shown next to one. In Greek mythology, Ganymede was the most attractive of mortals, which led Zeus, in the form of an eagle, to abduct him for service as cup- bearer to the Gods. Similar relief plaques by this sculptor have sold for record prices in major international auction houses. In very good used condition within newer giltwood frames as shown. Photographed through the frame's glass which explains reflections. Shipped fully insured with tracking number. Measurements: Frames: 23.5" by 19" (59.7 cm by 48.3 cm); Visible Images: 13" by 8.5" (33 cm by 21.6 cm) approximately. Item ID: 1641
