Here is a set of six Hitchcock style painted dining chairs. The chairs retain their original painted and stenciled surface which is in remarkable condition. The top turned crest rail has a gold stenciled design on the pillow back. Hand painted acanthus leaves and gold lines continue along the stiles. Check out the wide center rail with the complicated stenciled bowl of fruit and flowers in shades of gold against a black and rosewood background. The chairs retain their original rush seats which are in excellent condition. Look closely and you will see where one of the chairs is missing the moulding which frames the 4 sides of the seat. Another chair is missing only one side moulding. This is not obvious and certainly does not affect the integrity or function of the chairs. Gold stenciling and highlighting continues on the chair legs and rungs. These chairs are all extremely tight and sturdy. They show all the desirable and expected wear seen on early country painted chairs.
