Rare Original Tardieu Copper Engraving The Celebrated "Graman Quacy" C. 1790 "Le celebre Graman Quacy" good condition. Plate measures 9.25"X7.25" Graman Quacy is most celebrated Witch Doctor Suriname's history. His prophesies would come true and he was able to point out who was a thief and who was innocent. Plantation owners would call on him when a crime was committed to discover the culprits. He was well paid for his services. He accumulated enough money and with his good name bought his freedom. He set up his own medical practice and office for detecting criminals. In Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, Stedman describes Quacy as "one of the most Extraordinary Black men in Surinam and Perhaps in the World .By his insinuating temper and industry this negro not only obtained his Freedom from a State of Slavery . . . but by his Wonderful artifice & ingenuity has found the means of acquiring a very Competent Subsistence."
