Cartoon from "Le Rire" ARTIST : Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen (French 1859-1923) "Deceptive simple, Steinlen's design have a surprising vigor - somehow they insinuate themselves into your consciousness, whether you like it or not he produced relatively few commercial posters. The bulk of his work was book and magazine illustration." (Rennert) This illustration shows a short man approaching some seated women at the famous "Moulin de la Galette". He asks if one of them would like to waltz, and she replies, no, thank you. He retorts: 'You have made a mistake!'" Well colored, and displaying the original mailing labels of the time. Original color cover from the satirical weekly magazine "le Rire", dated 11 January 1886. SF02/$250 Size of sheet is 8 x 11.5 inches, overall very good condition - slight foxing at edges not affecting image.
