An interesting octagonal Quillwork Tea Caddy with finely rolled polychrome and gilt paper. This one is remarkably intact especially considering its age, only a few of the scrolls are missing. Women in the 18th Century purchased the wooden boxes in kits and spent their leisure time quilling their own designs. Small pieces of paper were wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. These shaped coils were arranged to form flowers, leaves and other ornamental patterns and packed tightly and glued on their edge. Quillwork is mentioned in Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. Additional photos available.
