This impressive quarter sawn oak grandfather or tall case clock is marked Tiffany & Co., New York and was sold thru their jewelry stores in the early 1900’s. The original clock movement was made by Matthias Bauerle. Under the Peerless mark, a highly regarded German clock company. They are widely considered to be among the highest quality ever made. The clock bonnet has 3 finely turned finials and a swan’s neck pediment. There are delicately turned full columns on either side of the face door. Notice the lovely pierced carve d design in the side panels. The bonnet door retains its original lock and key. The original richly decorated clock face has brass castings surrounding the silvered dial. Notice the intricate chased work design in the central brass panel. The clock hands are original as well as the sweep second hand and working calendar dial. The small lower dial numbered 1-31 represents the days of the month that is identified by the clock movement. This corresponds to the moon dial which rotates as the moon develops from a new moon to a full moon. The moon dial changes its image accordingly from full moon thru the phases of the moon to a new moon represented by painted scenes of a village and a harbor with ships. The clock case has simple reeding to the side of the tall arched beveled glass door. Look closely and you will see some slight loss of wood which would have covered the brass hinge. “This is not obvious, but if bothersome, arrangements can be made to repair the light damage. The clock retains its original 2 brass weights and brass pendulum. The base of the clock has a recessed panel with a delicately carved wreath of bell flowers. The case rests on boldly carved paw feet. On the right side of the case is a slight seam separation which is common and does not detract from its integrity or beauty. The clock works is in excellent running condition, striking every hour and half hour. The strike has a lovely sound and resonates beautifully. The clock requires winding only once a week and comes with its crank. The clock retains its original finish which is in very good condition having a deep rich color and patina.
