“This is a top quality Prisoner of War (POW) cane from World War I (The Great War). Carved from one piece of wood with a straight up handle with wrist strap holes. It is filled with a range of extremely well carved figural and design elements. This includes Shields with Spurs, and Encircling Peace Dove holding a four leaf clover. It has a central four-panel section with four cartouches: "SOUVENIER", "INTERNEMENT", "DE MON", and "NEUENKIRCH" (a Swiss Canto). Below the central section are a horseshoe surrounding a cross, and a four leaf clover overlaid onto a heart. Below this is an encircling panel of deeply ridged lines, oak branches and leaves with acorns attached. All of this work done in medium to high relief carving. Excellent condition. Golden patination. A top example of this genre” Overall length: 36 1/2 inches.
