This magnificent silvered and parcel gilt plaque after Justin Mathieu (1796-1864) depicts in high relief a medieval European battle. Measures 20.5 x 15.5 x 2.75 in (52 x 39 x 7 cm).  Signed JUSTIN M.  These two armies appear to date from the 11th to 12th century, and one carries the flag of the French, adorned with fleur-de-lys, and the coat-of-arms of their opponent is a shield with diagonal stripe, suggesting England. Recently purchased at auction, and newly gilt and silvered.  This artist worked in plaster, pewter and bronze, and is known for his highly detailed, realistic reliefs of historically important scenes.
