Came from private home near Lyon. Early 1800's
French overdoors are so versatile in their uses for today’s interior design. They were once installed over doorways in a boiserie (wooden paneled room). Their ornamental motifs would have been duplicated throughout the rest of the room. Today, they can be used as overdoors once again, inside or outside, retrofitted as headboards for beds, or hung on the wall as a piece of artwork.
This stunning antique French overdoor came from the Lyon area of France. The deeply hand carved ornamentation is rich, thick and highly detailed. There is a demilune linear molding of stylized egg and leaf motif and an oval cartouche with the initials of H over C or C over H at the center. Floral and foliate motifs extend half way down either side of the cartouche. The thick convex linear molding at the bottom is of crossed ribbons around large linear oak leaves. The back is finished out with a simple raised demilune molding.
This rare antique French overdoor from the area of Lyon will bring much viewing pleasure to any area of the home. Condition: Old restorations; rubs and nicks to wood, slight age cracks
