Antique Napoleon Marble Bust Sculpture After Antoine Denis Chaudet (1763-1810)
This is a tremendous marble bust of the emperor, Napoleon, after the original design by Antoine Denis Chaudet (French, 1763-1810) which debuted in 1811. Measures: 24 x 14.5 x 11 in; 61 x 37 x 28 cm.
This design, along with a bust of the empress, Josephine, became a very popular depiction of the king and was widely copied by artists in France and abroad, including Bartolomeo Franzoni of Carrrara, whose bust measuring 23.5 in (60 cm) resides in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Interestingly, it was Napoleon’s sister, Elisa, the Princess of Lucca and Piombino, who resided in and controlled production of these marble sculptures. Originals and sculptures after Chaudet reside in institutional collections around the world, including the Louvre, the Palais des beaux-arts de Lille, the Chateau de Versailles and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
