A very rare, complete set of carved oak paneling from a Haussmannien apartment, boulevard Raspail, Paris, 1880

Panels are interchangeable and can be re-configured

Boiserie or intricately carved wooden paneled rooms were very popular from the seventeenth century to present in French interior design. They were either left in their natural state, stained and waxed, or painted. Elaborate to very simple decorations were used, and moldings were copied from previous periods or from the current period. The decorated panels were not restricted to just the walls of a room but were also used on doors, overdoors, and as frames surrounding paintings or tapestries set into the paneling. This magnificent antique French boiserie or wooden paneled room dates from the last quarter of the 1800’s. It is in the Louis XVI Style and can be configured several different ways. Found in Paris, this boiserie was from a lawyer’s office on boulevard Raspail. It is complete with two still life floral paintings over the doors and a tapestry depicting the grounds of a chateau. The tapestry features the forested grounds in the back of a chateau. A bird dog is pointing to a grouse is in the right forefront. A fountain and stream are on the grounds, and there are more chateaux in the distant hillside. A pair of squirrels perched on a branch is in the upper right hand corner eating nuts, and another bird in the trees watches on in the upper left hand corner. The tapestry border has rolled acanthus and bellflower motifs which are duplicated in the wooden hand carvings on the doors. The tapestry is framed with acanthus leaf linear motifs. Throughout the entire room, the superb hand carving is out of the wood, not applied. On the doors, tiny stems of leaves fade into the wood, while highly detailed baskets of fruit, flowers, and scrolling vines in a candelabra motif project outward from the wood with great detail. Beneath this panel there is a row of wave scroll motifs. On the narrow panels, intertwining laurel leaves centered by a stalk of bellflowers arise from acanthus leaves. Rolled reed and ribbon linear moldings are at the top periphery of the boiserie.

Today, it is very rare to find a complete boiserie. Most often, only a portion of a room is found from single panels or doors and overdoors to perhaps a small wall.

CONDITION: Good condition. Moldings at chair rail and base board missing. Door surrounds missing along panels (shown complete in top photo, but now missing as seen in lower photos); Door knobs missing. Please note these can be duplicated to originals and replacement quotes already exist. Minor rubs and nicks to wood. Wear consistent with age and use

Height=121 1/2, Total Linear=Approximately 668 inches or 55.6 feet..
