OUR LADY OF HALLE
The Dark Virgin, or Our Lady of Halle, is located at a 12th century cathedral in Halle, Belgium. The Black Madonna is depicted with cannon balls at her feet, as there is a legend that her presence saved the city of Halle during a seige of the city in 1580 by Philip of Cleef. In the legend, the Black Madonna caught cannon balls in her lap, thereby miraculously saving the city. Our Lady of Halle once belonged to St. Elizabeth of Hungary and was passed down to her daughter Sophia of Thuringia. She was then passed down through the royal lineage and was given to Countess Mechtildis of Holland who donated the Madonna to the church in Halle.
