Antique Louis XV Style Ormolu Bronze Cartel Clock by Henry Vian (1860-1905)

This magnificent cartel clock in the Louis XV style comes from Henri Vian (1860-1905) of Paris.  Height: 37.5 in; 95 cm.  Movement, signed A. Brocot and Delettrez, Paris, is an 8 day spring driven movement with half hour strike on a bell. "hr. Vian" on the rear of the soldier.  Rear door is missing.  Missing front bezel crystal.  Movement works with missing bell and pendulum.  Weight: approximately 50 lbs.

Vian was a celebrated bronzier and grandfather of Boris Vian who specialized in bronzes in the 18th century style, particularly light fittings. He participated in the Great Exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1900 and received a Gold Medal in 1889. Based at 5 rue de Thorigny, Paris, his family continued the business until 1944 when the city of Paris took over the premises for Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art (the National School of Applied Arts and Art Crafts). For an apparently identical bracket clock by Vian, circa 1885, see lot 85 of the Important 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art sale at Christie's in London, March 20th of 2003, which was offered with an estimate of 5,000-8000 GBP ($7,800-12,500) and which closed at 6,214 GBP ($9,744).
