This antique porcelain urn features a reticulated bronze pedestal, serpents, and a cartouche depicting Paul and Virginia, the ill-fated sweethearts described in the 1787 French romantic novel by Bernardin de St Pierre, Paul et Virginie, which was translated and widely read throughout Victorian England.  The novel centers around a shipwreck, during which the heroine must shed her clothes to be rescued. She refuses to sacrifice her modesty and drowns.  Porcelain dates from the mid-19th century, electrified in the early 20th century. Lamp measures 39  by 8.5 by 7 inches.  The lamp has modern wiring and plug and is ready for use.
