Antique Vienna Figurative Painted Porcelain Charger After Friedrich August von Kaulbach

Unavailable

This delightful hand-painted and parcel-gilt and enameled charger, circa 1900, depicts a woman with stringed instrument after the original painting by Friedrich August von Kaulbach (1850-1920) known as Die Lautenschlagerin, or portrait of a young lady in full figure, painted in 1882 in Munich.  Signed P. Hoffmann.  On verso are the Vienna beehive mark and title.  She appears to be holding a tar, from the Persian word chartar, which arrived in Spain and is also known as the quitarra or chitarra.  A successful portraitist and painter of historical subjects, Kaulbach was the son of Theodor Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Kaulbach Wilhelm Kaulbach, another leading member of the Kaulbach family of painters. He is said to have emulated the German master, Hans Holbein. After moving to Munich in 1871 he acquired numerous patrons from among the elite and nobles in Munich society, and acquired the moniker, "Painter Prince", by his contemporaries.  In the following decade he was appointed director fo the Munich academy.  ( Viennese Austrian )
