Marchal 19th Century French Figural Chinoiserie Group Terracotta Sculpture

This lovely terracotta group sculpture of Chinese subject matter depicts two finely adorned ladies and boy in jester costume with two roosters.  Signed A. Marchal after the artist, Andree Oda Marchal.  Measures: 20 x 17 x 22 in. Later giltwood base shows numerous small losses and rubbing to gilding. A portion of the standing woman's headdress is chipped. There are small abrasions and age cracks. Also, some earlier minor chips, such as to the edge of the fan, with well done infill restorations.  Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, June 9, 2017, Lot 213, $5,000-7,000 estimate. 

According to Sotheby's, an identical group signed A. Marchal resides in the collection of Musee du Cinquantenaire (Cinquantenaire Museum) located in Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels, one of the largest museums in Europe, known for its collection of European decorative and fine art.

A similar group in the manner of Marchal was offered by Sotheby's in New York in their sale of Property from the Collection of Ingrao on October 20, 2006, in lot 157 with an estimate of $5,000-$8,000, and sold for $10,200.
