Antique 18th Century Ukrainian Polish Icon the Pochayiv Mother of God Matka Boska Poczajowska
A very rare authentic antique, 18th century, Ukrainian – Polish icon, The Pochayiv Mother of God” Почаївська ікона Пресвятої Богородиці ". “Matka Boska Poczajowska” “Чудотворна ікона Почаївської Божої Матері”” Почаївська Ікона Божої Матері”
The Pochayiv Mother of God icon is venerated equally by Ukrainian orthodox, Ukrainian Greek Catholic (Greco-Catholic), Ukrainian orthodox and Polish Roman Catholic.
The Icon is finely hand painted in Polish -Ukrainian manner on a wood panel with insert splint in the back. The icon depicting The Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. The icon is held by two winged angels with the Holy Spirit, descending above, as a dove. Inscribed at the base in Cyrillic alphabet “Representation of the Immaculate Mother of God of Pochayiv” with the impression of Mary’s right foot in the rock below flanked by the images of the Pochayiv monastery.

Icons of The Pochayiv Mother of God are extremely rare compared to the other icons. Most of known The Pochayiv Mother of God icons are painted after 1833 in typical Russian style. After the fall of the Polish November Uprising of 1830-31 Russian tsarist occupation government seized Pochayiv monastery in 1833 because of the involvement of the Basilian monks in support of the November Uprising. The Basilian monks were removed from the monastery, and the monastery was handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church and passed to the Orthodox monks brought from Russia, Greco-Catholics were forced to the acceptance of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is to this day in the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate. However, Basilian monks hid the original “icon and probably passed it to the Polish noble and aristocratic family Tarnowski, the owners of Pochayiv, its fate is unknown.
CONDITION: In its original condition, free of repairs or restorations, with an old patina and wear, some flakes in the paint. The bottom center slightly burnt and blackened by the vigil lamp which was glowing in front of the icon.
DIMENSIONS: 28.5 cm x 21.5 cm (11.22 inches x 8.46 inches).
