ANtique 1857 Ivory and ormolu Jewish Prayer book Highly ornate
This 1857 Antique Jewish prayer book has an ivory front with carved leaves and beautiful metal work. The edges of the book cover solid brass and the sides and back are either thin sheets of ivory or possibly celluloid. I am leaning towards the ivory but I can't guarantee that. The red material backing looks to be hand embroidered. The book measures 5" x 3 7/8" and is 1 3/4" thick. It has an ornate metal hinge closure as well. The inside of the book reads " The Form of Daily Prayers according to te custom of the German and Polish Jews with New Translation by Joseph Guns. Vienna 1857 Published by Jos. Schlesinger Library L. Seitenstettengasse 5. Made in Austria. THe book has rich gilding on the edges and is in very good condition. a few pages had a little bending on the side edges, and some shelf wear on the back. Considering it is over 155 years old.It has 679 pages. It is half in English and half in Hebrew.
This is a real treasure to have been so well kept and loved all these years.
