This unique, one-of-a-kind sofa by Nicola L (1935-) dates from circa 1970, and is similar to the so-called "Giant-to-Lie-on-Sofa", exhibited at the Waddell Gallery in New York in 1973. Measures 73 in (185 cm) wide, 25 in (63 cm) high, and 31 in (79 cm) deep. It has a wooden frame with yellow painted finish and metal legs, shaped seat cushion and loose pillows upholstered in ultrasuede which form the shape of a male figure with brown hair. Included is a single head cushion, two torsos, two arms and one leg cushion. The pillows may be arranged in any number of ways to create a comfortable seating arrangement or decorative sculpture. The most logical arrangement for seating would employ the two torso cushions as the seat back, with head at one end, and leg and arms draped on top and beyond the torso cushions to form armrests. This design is believed to date from the earliest period of Nicola L's career when she began creating and exhibiting her functional sculpture designs at the Daniel Templon gallery in Paris. These early designs included seating in the shape of a foot and mouth, and a floor lamp in the shape of an eye. Since moving to New York in 1979, her designs have been exhibited at numerous galleries, including Alan Moss, Vrej Baghoomian, Peder Bonnier, and Wooster Projects. In 2006 Ingrao Gallery in Manhattan held a major retrospective exhibition of her work. ( za- )
