Finely executed watercolor portrait of Nicholas Charrington (1771-1827). It is signed on the lower right with monogram HTW, the initials of Henry Tanworth Wells (1828-1903), a British portrait painter whose work is part of the collections of the Royal Academy of Arts, the National Portrait Gallery, and Tate Gallery. Nicholas Charrington was a senior member of the Charrington family of brewers. Charrington was a famous English brewery founded in 1738 (making beers such as 'Toby Ale'). In 1967 Charrington merged with Bass to become Bass Charrington. The reverse of the frame has a label from Walker's Galleries, New Bond Street, London. In very good condition with minor mat foxing and imperfections to gilt frame as shown. Photo was taken through glass which explains reflections.
