New London Bent Front Gouge Carving Chisel 5/8 inch

$38.00
Quantity available: 1

This is a unique shaped bent front, spoon gouge, carving chisel that is 5/8" wide at the top cutting edge, and has the spoon shaped full sweep gouge, with with the bent front design. This one is marked "NEW LONDON O" on the steel. We only have one known toolmaker in New London Ohio, on record, James Starr, manufactured during 1850-54 era. There appears to be a name above the location stamp, but we are not able to read it. Starr was better know for making molding planes, so it is possible that he did make this chisel, but we can't verify it at this time. The steel is of good quality, and we didn't sharpen it at all, so if you intend to use this one it will require some honing, but the shape is basically there and is fairly sharp, just a few ting edge dings. It is 9.0" long overall, sharp, ready to use condition, no rust or pitting, and and has a nice round hardwood handle that has a nice finish is in good solid condition with only a few dings to report, no cracks. A very hard to find chisel in great shape overall!
