Certificate Vignette New England Electric System (NEES) --- traces its roots to the banks of the Connecticut River in New Hampshire and Vermont. There, the company built its first hydroelectric power plant and transmission line in the early 1900s. Over the next half century, the company developed a fleet of hydroelectric and fossil-fueled power plants, constructed hundreds of miles of transmission lines, and acquired dozens of small local electric companies that distributed power to customers at retail. In 1998, as part of a sweeping restructuring of the electric industry in the region (in which NEES played a leadership role), the company sold its generation business to concentrate on electricity delivery. NEES became part of the international company National Grid Group plc, and adopted the name National Grid USA. In 2000, Eastern Utilities Associates became part of National Grid USA. In 2002, Niagara Mohawk joined us as well.
