The Maratha Pata, or gauntlet sword, is unique to parts of India and was used primarily by horsemen. The steel gauntlet covers the hand, wrist, and lower forearm. This sword was an effective extension of the arm. This is an early example which appears to have seen much action. The gauntlet has several holes, likely from battle damage, which were patched long ago during its working like. The 31" tapering lens-section blade was made without fullers and shows much wear and numerous nicks from blade strikes; the tip is clipped. Metal shows great age with dark brown rust patina. Overall length 43".
