20TH Century Chinese Export Reproduction of a Sacred Bird and Butterfly Plate measuring 6 7/8" in diameter. Historic Charleston Reproduction Made by Mottahedeh. Mottahedeh was and still is a factory in Portugal. Mildred Mottahedeh was one of if not the largest and well known collector of 18TH and 19TH Century chinese export porcelain. She and her husband Raffy loved it so much that they opened a factory in Portugal to reproduce these fine antique examples that had grow to love and traveled all over the world to hunt and find the finest pieces that came to own. The original sacred bird and butterfly pattern was made in the early to late 19TH century. There was a lady in the Washington,D.C. area who before she died gave her massive collection of sacred bird and butterfly to Historic Charleston, S.C. Museum. Mottahedeh apparently came along and reproduced it and it is sold in Charleston at va museum. Several years ago, I met this ladies daughter at a show in Washington, D.C. at a Antique Show in Georgetown where I was exhibiting at and she has started purchasing old antique pieces of this pattern from me.
