(British Territories, History) LAWRENCE-ARCHER, Captain J. H. Monumental Inscriptions of the British West Indies. London: Chatto and Windus, 1875. 11.25 x 9, hardcover, rebound in green buckram with gold gilt on spine, 442 pages. Ex-library copy previously owned by NY Society Library (stamped on back of title page). Very Good condition. Interesting Association Copy. Armorial bookplate of John Eacott Manahan with a manuscript gift inscription. Anastasia, the wife of Manahan was the reputed Grand Duchess of Russia, youngest daughter of Tsar Nikolai Romanov II of Russia. Anastasia, the most famous woman who claimed to be the daughter of Nicholas and Empress Alexandra married Manahan in 1969. They lived in Charlottesville, Virginia until her death in 1984. Manahan was a staunch supporter of Anastasia a.k.a. Anna Anderson. After a long court battle, tissue obtained during a 1979 operation that Anna had undergone at Charlottesville's Martha Jefferson Hospital for an internal blockage proved to some that she was not the Grand Duchess. Supporters continue to dispute the D.N.A. findings.
