Beautiful, relatively large miniature portrait of Queen Louise of Prussia wearing a headband with a golden star holding a veil that wraps under her chin and a white, loose tunic or Empire style dress, with gold trim and hints of an ermine cape (traditionally worn by royalty) can be seen over her left shoulder as we face her. Queen Louise of Prussia (1776-1810) was the consort of King Frederick William III of Prussia with whom she had a happy marriage and ten children, two of them future monarchs. She is best remembered for meeting with Napoleon I to appeal on behalf of her people who had suffered greatly during the Napoleonic wars. When she died prematurely at age thirty four Napoleon, greatly impressed by her personality, remarked that the King had lost it's best minister. The miniature is signed Laurence, a French spelling of the name which, together with the style of the gilt, Empire, easel back frame, leads us to believe this is a French piece. It is done after the original painting by German painter Gustav Karl Ludwig Richter (1823-1884). Unexamined outside frame, picture taken through glass which explains reflections. In very good used condition with wear to frame's fabric as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number. Measurements: Frame: 7" tall including laurel leaf coronation by 4.74"wide; Visible Image: 3 5/8" by 2 7/8" oval approximately. Item ID:1959
