This is a mid 19th century Prie Dieu or prayer chair. These were found in large manor homes in France and were also found in antebellum homes in Louisiana. This chair is in original condition and has its original red velvet fabric. The carving of the crucifix is very intricate and done by a master artisan. The Vernis Martin finish is also original. There are no breaks on the piece, although the upholestry straps could use some tightening. Obviously the person (persons) who owned this Prie Dieu did some serious praying. This is a great prayer chair and it needs a loving home.
