**Melrose Watch Co. 15j Key Wind and Key Set Circa: 1865. Rare early American Watch Producer. In 1864 A.L. Denninson thought that if he could produce a good movement at a reasonable price, there would be a ready marked for it. In 1865, this was before Elgin, Rockford, Hampden, Hamilton, South Bend, Illinois, were even thought of. Denninison went to Switzerland to find a supplier of cheap parts, as arbors were too costly in America. He found a source for parts, mainly the train and escapement and the balance. About 600 sets were to be furnished. Dials were first made by Mr. Gold and Mr. Spear, then later by Mr. Hull and Mr. Carpenter. Tremont had hoped to produce 600 sets of trains per month. In May of 1865, the first movements were ready for the market. They were 18 size, key wind, 7 15 jewels, and engraved Tremont Watch Co. In the late 1866, the company moved to Melrose. The Melrose Watch Co. produced about 5,000 watches. Serial number range from 1 to about 10-32,000. This watch is a fine surviving example of this rare American production run. Clean, running and still accurate. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET. BUY SOMETHING PROVEN IN TIME.
