This statue depicts the Lord Buddha as he meditates on purity and enlightenment. The Buddha, whose original name was Siddhartha Guatama, was the founder of Buddhism, the religion and the philosophy that produced a great culture throughout much of south east Asia. "Buddha", meaning "the awakened one" or "enlightened one" is a title not a name. The Buddha is in the meditation hand position or Dhyana mudra. The Dhyana mudra is the mudra of meditation, of concentration on the Good law, and of the attainment of spiritual perfection. The Buddha sits in his pose of meditation with the most perfect expression of bliss on his face that embodies the Ancient Buddhist ideals of peace, blessing and serenity.
