Massive Marble Topped Walnut Wood Louis XV Style Chateau Buffet A Massive Antique French Chateau Buffet with Original Marble Top in the Louis XV Style from Montpayroux, Veneered European Walnut Wood over Solid European Walnut Wood -Age: Late 1700;s/Early 1800’s From a French Chateau in Montpayroux, comes this commissioned antique walnut wood, Louis XV style buffet with original conforming marble top, 2 inches thick over four front doors flanked on either end by two open shelf corner units. The serpentine shape is complete with curved and canted corners, stepped in and stepped out shaping to the front, out turned angled pilasters and a plinth base. There are a total of four different depths to this buffet in the wood and marble construction. The ornamentation is all hand carved tiny shells with interlacing and bellflower drops, acanthus leaves, C and S- Scrolls, cartouches, and gadrooned shells. Ebonized trim moldings highlight this piece throughout. A note on French furniture history during the 17th & 18th C.: French ebenistes (furniture makers specializing only in luxury furniture) during the 17THC. and 18THC. were commissioned to make specific pieces for Royalty first, then for the Bourgoisie. Only the prime pieces would have veneer over solid wood during these periods. Undulating curves exhibited on this buffet were extremely difficult to accomplish. On this piece, a serpentine shape would have been hand carved out of a thick piece of walnut wood for the first door. Then, a second identical shape would have to be perfectly matched the first and so on. Walnut wood veneers would then be applied on both sides. This is the reason antique curved pieces are so rare . Note the very discreet elongated small c-scroll molding on the curves to either side of the gothic style arch and the incised leaves on the bottom sides of the front veneered panels. (Photo #2 & Photo #6) Condition: Previous Restorations to marble and wood; minor rubs to wood. Minor chips, rubs and scratches with slight losses to veins in marble. H=36 3/4, D=32 3/8, L=146 1/8 (12.2 feet)
