Massive 'Azulejo' Antique Tiled Plaque from Portugal (3 Sections)

The tiles are mounted on a wooden backing and the 3 panels are connected with metal brackets. All 3 sections are reinforced with 2x4's for stability. Age: Circa 1890

The word azulejo literally means "small square tile. For centuries, Portuguese royalty and spiritual leaders have decorated the inside and outside of their palaces, homes and churches with brilliantly colored antique Portuguese tile art.  In simple terms an azulejo is Portuguese for a square plaque of ceramic material, one side of which is decorated and glazed. Post-Gothic architecture in Portugal produced structures that sported huge, flat areas covered by plaster that were perfectly suitable for further decorations. Hand-painted Portuguese tiles were perfectly suited to fill that need. Color schemes standardized over time as well.  By the 17th century blue, yellow, green and white were being supplanted by just plain blue and white and became the color of choice from then on.

This massive Portuguese azulejo plaque depicts an Albarrada.  Albarrada means and urn, basket, vase or jar of flowers, sometimes flanked by cherubs, putti,  birds, or dolphins.  On this plaque, there are butterflies,  dragonflies pairs of two different types of birds  all surrounding a huge bouquet of mixed flowers and foliation. The urn in which they are placed has foliate motifs with double handles.  The pedestal the urn rests upon is decorated with lion’s faces and more varying foliate motifs.

This antique Portuguese azulejo tile will be the focal point on any wall.
