Marisol Escobar is a sculptor who was born in Paris to Venezuelan parents but spent most of her childhood in Los Angeles. She studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then in 1950 settled in New York where she studied at the Hans Hofmann School and the Art Students League. Her early works, small, playful figures roughly carved from wood, matured into mixed-media assemblages incorporating painting, drawing, carving, plaster casts, and found objects. Her sculpture grew in size as well as concept and in later years were larger than life. Marisol has been successful at translating segments of these assemblages into print. A single image, taken from the whole, is treated as an important separate entity, even though the style is sometimes whimsical and is always highly personal. Her artwork can be seen in the permanent collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and the Museum of Modern Art.
