I bought this carving from Peera's in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in the 1960's. A group of Makonde carvers had migrated to Dar in the 1950's and Peera's had a large offering. As with all Makonde carvings interpretation is in the eye of the beholder. This carving was made before so many trees of life, ujamaa carvings appeared. It is crude compared to some I own. By crude I mean it doesn't have the satiny, smooth finish of some more expensive pieces. This one, however, has always been a favorite because you can see the different shade of wood and the marks of the carver's adze. The figures have the typical Makonde features and the arm of the smaller figure is held close to its body. Much has been made of the fact that sometimes the left ear is larger than the other. Strangely enough the carver didn't show ears on these figures. There is a split on the taller figures right leg and the smaller figures left arm. In all the years I've had this carving this defect has never enlarged, but I've considered that in my pricing of the carving. I will take photos to show those two places if you are interested in buying the carving.
