What a handsome, yet practical piece of furniture! This English mahogany wardrobe was made by Frank Giles & Co. of Kensington and they are referred to as compactiums. The cabinet comes apart in 3 main pieces for ease in transporting. The center section has 2 doors with recessed inlaid panels of satinwood and flame mahogany. Inside, originally there was a shelf which has been eliminated. It appears the previous owner used the space to store a television hence the small hole in the back. Below the doors are 2 small drawers over 4 long drawers which graduate in size. All the drawers are hand dovetailed, inlaid and have dramatic flame mahogany fronts. Each retains their original cast brass hardware and working lock. The beveled mirrored doors on either side step out and extend above the center section with boldly designed cornices. Above each door is a recessed and inlaid decorative panel. The doors retain their original hardware and working locks. Over time, the left side where the door meets, has bowed slightly. This is only obvious upon close examination. The lock was professionally adjusted to compensate for the bow. It does not affect the door operation. Inside are 5 shelves. Inside the right door are 4 shelves and a small door on the bottom. The original mirrors on both doors have some very slight loss in their silvering. The finish is original and is in excellent condition having a deep rich color and patina. The amount of storage space this provides is immense. Its design would easily compliment a variety of styles.
