Mahogany Breakfront, Bookcase, Desk, Secretary

This lovely mahogany cabinet is referred to as a breakfront. Such pieces are extremely versatile and serve a multitude of purposes such as a china cabinet, bookcase and even a secretary desk. The cabinet comes in 2 pieces for ease in moving. The top has a bold cornice with 2 stepped out center doors and 2 side doors. Above them is a delicately carved ribbon and bow on the cornice frieze. Look closely and you will see that the glass doors have an unusual shape, called bubble glass. They are slightly curved between the fancy grillwork. Also, if you look very, very closely you will see where the 2 end doors originally had another applied grill section like the 2 middle doors. We believe they look great without them and do not detract from its presence. The original glass is in excellent condition. The 4 doors retain their original working locks and a key. Inside, there are a total of 6 adjustable shelves. The base cabinet has wonderfully carved detailing and dramatic flame mahogany graining. The top center drawer has a large carved rosette with applied mouldings. The drawer opens to reveal a droop down leather topped writing surface and 8 small cubbies with 2 small drawers for filing and storage. Below are 3 long drawers and 2 smaller drawers on either side. All have ornately cast solid brass pulls. Below each small drawer is a door having the same applied moulding and their original working locks. Each has a shelf inside. Notice the delicately carved narrow trim above and below the bottom doors. Another unique feature is the unusual shaped and carved ends of the base unit - very cool! The breakfront retains its original finish, which is in excellent condition having a very deep, rich color and patina. Here is a piece that would work well in a living room, dining room or office.
