Jennings Brothers bronzed bookends with original patina. Modeled after the Lion of Lucerne Swiss Guards memorial. The Löwendenkmal was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved into the wall of a sandstone quarry above Lucerne in 1821.
The motto below the lion, Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti means "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss." Mark Twain called the sculpture "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."

MARKED: JB 1570 on back as shown. Made by Jennings Brothers, Bridgeport, Connecticut.

MEASURES: 7-1/2 x 3 x 5 inches tall, each
