A Pair of exceptionally high quality mid 19th Century Louis XV style side chairs of solid carved Rosewood with original ormolu mounts (gilded cast bronze, one mount is missing). The springs and padding are in very good condition and only the fabric needs replacement, the casters are high quality originals and one foot has been expertly repaired. At the beginning of the 19th century, Paris replaced London for design and cultural inspiration for Americans. French craftsman who immigrated to America worked in East Coast cities producing furniture in the latest styles and by the mid 19th century the Rococo Revival Style was the latest fashion. It was based upon 18th century Louis XV furniture. This very fine pair of chairs were most likely made by one of the noted French craftsmen in American, possibly by Leon Marcotte of New York City. For related examples, see pg. 337, plate 561 and pg. 363, plate 618 in "Centuries and Styles of the American Chair" by Robert Bishop.
