GEORGE HEWITT, MARLBOROUGH Circa 1785


A small Wiltshire 'cottage' longcase clock in an oak case. A flat moulded hood pediment with gilded front and rear columns. A well proportioned case with a good patina. An early example of a painted dial with strawberries and floral decorations. A date aperture above the signature. A well constructed 'birdcage' Lantern type mechanism of 30 hour duration striking the hours on a bell.

George Hewitt of Marlborough was a talented clockmaker. It was a father and son business from around 1750. They are well documented with illustrations in the 'Wiltshire Watch and Clockmakers' book by J Young.
